The new Peugeot 308, recently awarded European Car of the Year 2014, completes its range with the arrival of the new PureTech 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine, producing 130bhp. In official witnessed tests, it has been shown to achieve new records for fuel economy: 99.1mpg and 1124.7 miles on a full tank of fuel.


This performance was achieved at the Almeria circuit in Spain, officially witnessed by the authority UTAC (Union Technique de l'Automobile, Motocycle et Cycle). A Peugeot 308 Hatchback, specified with the new PureTech 1.2-litre e-THP 130 turbo petrol engine with a manual six-speed gearbox, was driven for over 32 hours to consume the 13,5 gallons (51.4-litre) contents of its fuel tank. In so doing, the Peugeot 308 set a new record for fuel economy and distance driven on a single tank of fuel and to achieve this, several drivers took part in the driving such was the time and distance covered.

This performance was achieved with a standard production model and therefore allows the Peugeot 308 1.2-litre THP 130 to become the benchmark for its sector for most economical vehicle with a petrol engine.

The new engine boasts a new compact design, is powerful and highly-efficiency utilising the latest technology. This technology includes high-pressure direct injection (200 bar) of the fuel system and a new generation high performance turbocharger (turning at 240,000 rev/min), representing a real technological breakthrough. When specified in the New 308 - the most compact and lightest car in its segment - this engine can fully express its dynamism and exceptional fuel economy.

The New 308 is also available with a benchmark BlueHDi 1.6-litre diesel engine with 120bhp and a Combined Drive Cycle fuel economy of 91.1 mpg and lowest CO2 sector emissions of just 82g/km, so with the Peugeot 308 demonstrates the highest quality of its design and overall capability. Available in vehicles produced from the end of March, the Peugeot 308 1.2-litre e-THP 130 has a Combined Drive Cycle fuel economy of 61.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 107g/km.

The new Peugeot 308 is available with a choice of five petrol engines (82 to 156bhp) and five diesel engines (92 to 150bhp) and the new PureTech turbo petrol engines are being made available on the 208 and 2008 crossover with the e-THP 110 in the coming weeks.

I know Peugeot's markets are on a growing path all over the world, but when will they be available in the United States. I realize that it almost made it with GM in 2007, but the world's economy got shaky and practically collapsed, which postponed Peugeot's breaking back in to the US market. Thank you. Linda
I compare or rate Peugeot & Citroen to the Benchmark Ford Brand as being quality, world class vehicles...I own a Peugeot that gets 65 mpg and that is one of the reasons why I live in Russia as I have more freedom and choices plus have access to many French products and French stores...I plan to buy a Citroen soon...Thanx..MKB...
With this kind of performance this car seems ideal to compete with the Toyota Prius, etc. I know Peugeot is struggling to survive; it's a shame that these cars are not over in the US competing for American customers. Seems strange to leave hundreds of millions of customers without a chance to buy your product. What a shame. Love French cars. Hope to own one someday...If Kia and similar crap can do so well...C'mon Peugeot.

I'm with you....I would buy one in a heartbeat. I've owned everything from a Jaguar XKE, BMW 318i, MGBGT sports car, to VW vans and bugs, plus Honda Accords. I still miss the 1978 Peugeot Le Car, as funny looking as it was, I loved it....but then I don't buy cars to impress others. The gas mileage was great, 38 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway. I drove from L.A. to Montana several times by myself and always felt safe and secure that I wouldn't break down. I'll be one of the first in line when they bring them back to the U.S.A. market.
