“STRONGER”: AN EXHIBITION BY CHARLIE LE MINDU AT DS WORLD PARIS
If you are in Paris in the next couples of weeks, make a stop at the DS World Paris which hosts the preview of “Stronger”, an astonishing new exhibition by Charlie Le Mindu, the renowned hair artist and stylist to the stars.
The event was attended by a line-up of personalities and friends of the designer, including choreographer Blanca Li, and Basque chef Inaki Aizpitarte. Charlie Le Mindu opened the event with a stunning catwalk presentation of his new collection. For the first time, his creations were on show in phosphorescent colours ̶ in the dark. He also unveiled his new exhibition “Stronger”, with works including an original creation designed specially for the window of DS World Paris: “Déesse for DS World Paris”. A play on words since “déesse” or “goddess”, is pronounced the same way as the letters DS in French.
The public can visit the exhibition through to 20 March next, at 33 rue François 1er in Paris.
Charlie Le Mindu chose the bold, original world of DS World Paris, a showcase dedicated to Citroën’s DS line, to display his ‘goddesses’ in the windows and on each floor of the building. Alongside the Citroën DS3, DS3 Cabrio, DS4 and DS5, the renowned hair stylist is displaying a line-up of sumptuous heads with Amazon-like features and sculptural hairdos. Some of his most famous pieces are also on display, including the renowned “SpongeBob”, as worn by the no-less renowned Lady Gaga.
“DS World Paris is an unusual ideal venue, a fit setting for my goddesses, the embodiment of female power and seduction,” says Charlie Le Mindu. His creations ̶ including massive afros, traditional tribal masks and huge hair sculptures ̶ are inspired by the traditional masks and statues of sub-Saharan Africa and also by the famous Queen of Sheba whom he sees as the ultimate in female power. “I chose this warm, golden shade to highlight a new technique that involves dipping each natural hair in golden paint for a metallic effect,” explains Charlie Le Mindu.
For the window of DS World, he has created an amazing mask, illustrating his vision of the DS world. “This unique creation is my ‘DS goddess’. To my mind, a DS woman is an elegant, strong, original woman. And this vision is reflected in my sculpture.” Julien Faux, Director of DS World Paris, said, “We are delighted to welcome Charlie Le Mindu and his original work created specially for the window of DS World Paris. Charlie Le Mindu opens our programme for 2014 with an exhibition that sets the tone for all future events: bold, creative and sophisticated”.
After learning the basics of his trade in his grandmother’s salon, Charlie Le Mindu and his scissors travelled between Berlin, London and Paris. Today, he is hairdresser to an array of stars including Peaches, Rossi De Palma, Mylène Farmer and ̶ of course ̶ Lady Gaga, whose wildest hairpieces are his work. Charlie Le Mindu began creating his own Haute Coiffure collections a few years ago, in order to build bridges between the worlds of fashion and beauty. His most recent projects include the sleeve of “Crazy Horse”, single by Brigitte Fontaine and the windows of the Galeries Lafayette department store in June 2013. He has also made headpieces for the Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas.
